Know your level – don’t start WAY out of your range. If you’ve never done a 5k maybe don’t jump straight to 100 mile race. The whole idea is to build the momentum on top of wins. Save $1 a day. Do ONE pushup a day. Whatever your level make it winable so you don’t have any excuse not to do it. Then DO IT.
